How To Buy A Second Hand Car In Kenya

Buying a car is a huge financial decision that will have a direct effect on your present and future spending. That’s why it’s important to make the best decision early on, especially if you are buying a second hand car. Our in-house car expert at Carhoot, Ronald Busolo shared a few tips he finds essential when purchasing pre-owned vehicles.

Aesthetics: Condition and Appearance of the Car's Body

When inspecting a car you are interested in buying, it is important for you to check whether the vehicle in question has its original paint or has been repainted. Why? Painting and other aesthetic modifications could be indications that the car has been involved in either major or minor accidents. Be on the look out for any bends or dents on the chassis or frame.

A lot of people also forget to thoroughly inspect the condition of the interior. Take notes of the condition of the seats. Are the seat covers worn out or torn? Are the floor mats in good condition? Does the dashboard have any scratches or marks?

PRO-TIP: Always make notes of any dents, chips or body blemishes and inquire on the estimated cost to repair them. You can use this information to negotiate for a better deal or weigh your options if the car is still a great purchase decision.

Engine: How Does The Car Start?

When it comes to cars, sounds are a great indicator of the health. Make sure you start the car and listen for any delays or problems when doing so. Also be on the look out for any knocking sounds, engine squeaks from the bests and any rumbling. The cost of engine repair can be quite expensive and this small indicators can help save you from making an expensive purchase.

PRO TIP: Always check under the hood. Inspect the engine and battery for any signs of leakage, and check the belts for wear and tear.

Driving: How The Car Behaves During A Test Drive

A test drive is essential in making sure that the car you are interested is right for you. It will also give you better insights on how well the previous owner took care of it. Settle into the driving seat and take a good look around before you drive. Check the visibility through the rear windscreen. Can you see comfortably over your shoulder into your blind spot? Are the front pillars likely to block your view at junctions? Not all cars are made for every driver because of their different dimensions, and you might discover that the car you want is too big (or too small) for you.

PRO TIP: Check how vehicle responds to sudden acceleration and how smoothly it’s gears transition. Test it on a rough road and listen for any suspension noises. After your test drive check on the car’s engine temperature and level of other fluids. Is it too hot? Are there any leaks

Diagnostics: Use Tech To Get More Data

A car diagnostic test can determine if your vehicle has issues with its engine, exhaust, transmission, ignition coils, oil tank, throttle, and more. Scan the car using a diagnostics machine for any recorded errors.
